Springtime Wildlife Photography on the Isle of Mull

George & Lara

We’re well into our springtime wildlife photography workshop season here on the Isle of Mull and we’ve had some truly unforgettable moments already. No two photography workshops here on Mull are ever the same, and this year that trend has continued!

This season has been nothing short of spectacular for wildlife photography, and we've had some truly unforgettable moments. We’ve been out every day, capturing the incredible scenes nature has offered us. From otters to short-eared owls, white-tailed eagles to puffins, common dolphins to golden eagles, Mull’s wildlife has kept us entertained throughout.

For many of our guests, otters are the stars of the show and this spring, they’ve seriously performed with fantastic sightings in all kinds of weather. We've spent hours with large dog otters catching crustaceans, frolicking in the kelp and of course, snoozing. Until you’ve seen an otter fast asleep on a bed of kelp, you don’t know what ‘cute’ truly means. That opinion isn’t necessarily shared by fish and crustaceans, but it certainly is by us wildlife photographers!

Photographing otter mums with their playful pups is such a privilege and for many of our guests, a real ‘tick’ on their Isle of Mull photographic workshops. Watching the otter pups learning to swim and fish under their mother’s eye is a memory to cherish, even if it means waiting patiently in the wind and rain! If anything, the latter has made for more interesting wildlife photography, producing atmospheric compositions that are so perfectly… Mull!

As ever, the Treshnish Isles are a wildlife photographer’s dream. We’ve been heading out to Lunga and Staffa every week with Turus Mara since late April, watching the islands come alive with their famous seabird colonies. It’s been amazing to feel the heartbeat of the islands, seeing the puffins, razorbills, guillemots, shags, and so much more return for breeding season, building their nests, and now feeding the chicks. Plus, of course, the common and bottlenose dolphins that often join for the trip over!

The bluebells and sea thrift have made for interesting photographic elements, painting our images with beautiful blues and glorious pinks. Birds in flight continue to be a fun challenge and with the tiny pufflings now here, puffins returning to their burrows with sand eels are up next!

Our day spent on Lunga each week is one of Turus Mara’s aptly named “linger longer on Lunga” trips, allowing us extra time on the island. We’ve really enjoyed getting super creative with our fantastic guests, trying out new techniques, approaches, and challenging imaginations. It’s that creative thinking that’s at the core of our wildlife photography workshops here on Mull, allowing guests to see the natural world differently.

Then, of course, eagles. Both the white-tailed eagle and golden eagle are synonymous with wildlife photography on the Isle of Mull. We’ve been lucky enough to have a number of trips aboard the Lady Jayne with Mull Charters this season, with brilliant sightings of the majestic white-tailed eagle making for some stunning wildlife photography opportunities. Watching and photographing these eagles is always thrilling and adds incredible shots to our wildlife photography portfolios.

Finally, short-eared owls. We were both (George and Lara) out most days over winter observing these beautiful birds in a few different areas, waiting to see where they’d set up camp for spring and nesting season. They’ve rewarded our — and wildlife photography workshop guests — patience, offering some gorgeous photographic opportunities over the last few weeks. There’s nothing quite like a back lit shortie, with their distinctive, translucent primary feathers illuminated.

We've had a blast this spring and there's still so much to come! As ever, our massive thanks to the wonderful guests we've had the absolute pleasure of guiding this season. The shared memories and special encounters make these trips.

We can't wait to share these experiences with you. George
