Magical Mull Isle of Mull Otter Photography Workshop Bespoke Wildlife Photography Workshop

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What happens if the wildlife doesn't show up during our workshop?
Living on the Isle of Mull, our guides have amassed a wealth of local wildlife knowledge and they know the best places to find and photograph wildlife. If you're looking into a Short Workshop, we highly recommend booking a minimum of two days, ideally three. The more time you put in, the higher the chance of sharing a truly special encounter with wildlife. If looking at our Expedition Packages, the beauty of booking onto a long workshop is that you're maximising your chance to experience an amazing wildlife encounter! Of course, the otters and all wildlife on Mull are wild and there's always a chance that they decide not to play ball. If they don't appear, the weather is dreich, or luck is against us, there’s not much we can do. This unpredictability is simply part of the adventure of wildlife photography.
  • How fit do I need to be?
Quite fit and agile, but most importantly confident in your balance. We won’t be hiking miles and miles, as much of otter searching involves time in the vehicle but when we do walk, it can be across tricky terrain. Some of the tidal flats are rocky and slippery. Otter fieldcraft requires equal measures of stealth, agility, and balance. Please convey any fitness or mobility concerns to us when making your booking.
  • What will the weather be like?
Put simply: very Scottish. Expect the weather to be highly unpredictable. It’s not unreasonable to expect sunshine, rain, hail, and snow in a single day... seriously. As the Norwegian's rightly say, "there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing!". Once booked, Lara and George will be in touch with a list of what to bring on your workshop. This will cover clothing suggestions, as well as the camera equipment you'll need.
  • Do you organise accommodation on Mull?
Short Photography Workshops: Unfortunately not. If you've booked a Short Workshop with Experience Mull, you will be expected to find your own accommodation. Your guides will pick you up and drop you off each day. However, please aware that they are based in the North of Mull and depending on your location, they may organise a mid-way meeting point instead. We can, of course, give advice on our recommended places to stay. Spring & Autumn Expedition Workshops: Yes! Our Experience Mull Expedition Workshops are styled more like a package holiday. Your accommodation, any additional wildlife excursions, guidance and travel whilst on Mull is all included in the cost of the workshop. Check out our Expedition Packages for more information on what's included and what's not.
  • Can I bring a car?
Of course! In fact, if you’re planning on arriving a couple of days before/staying longer, this is absolutely necessary. This option may give you some extra time to revisit places we’ve seen, explore different areas of the island, and so on. Moreover, it’ll give you an opportunity to discover mainland Scotland — We’re more than happy to assist with ideas/suggestions of places to see! For the duration of your workshop, we do suggest you travel in the vehicle with our guides; this is for the dissemination of information, ease of travel, parking, and so you enjoy Mull's scenery and wildlife without worrying about navigation. If, for some reason, you'd prefer to stay in your own vehicle, please discuss this with us first.
  • Do you offer editing sessions in Adobe Lightroom?
If you're booked onto an Expedition Workshop with Experience Mull, we do offer optional post-processing and editing sessions. This decision will be made as a group on your workshop, and more often than not, people choose to stay out for longer with the wildlife. Having said that, if there's a particularly wet day and the wildlife hiding away, you will be given the option to return to the accommodation a little earlier than normal. The guides will talk you through their editing workflow, with examples, and help with any questions you have about editing.
  • I want to photograph puffins, is there a certain time of year I need to come?
Yes! The seabird breeding season is from the beginning of May to the end of July. If you want to see and photograph puffins and other seabirds, please look into our Spring Expedition Wildlife Photography Workshops!
  • Is there a certain time of year to see puffins with sand eels?
The puffins start to bring sand eels ashore when their pufflings have hatched. This usually begins in mid-June. If puffins with sand eels in their beaks is your main focus, then make sure you book our Spring Expedition Workshops from mid-June onwards. If you want gorgeous bokeh effects of soft pink sea thrift or bluebells, plus behaviours such as billing and burrow excavation, then our Spring Expedition Workshops in May are the best time for you.
  • Are white-tailed eagles available all year round?
We incorporate a boat trip with Mull Charters to see the white-tailed eagles on both our Spring and Autumn Expedition Workshops. If you'd like us to accompany you on a trip outside of our Expedition workshops, this can be arranged on an individual basis.
  • I'm booked onto an Expedition Workshop. What happens if one of the boat trips is cancelled?
On our Expedition Workshops, we organise our boat trips with Mull Charters and/or Turus Mara towards the beginning of the week. If any bad weather, or some other reason, causes postponement or cancellation, we should still have time to re-arrange the trips at some point during your workshop with us. If the trip is postponed or cancelled by the operators (Mull Charters / Turus Mara), and we aren't able to reschedule it whilst you're on Mull, the cost of the boat trip(s) will be refunded to you in full. Our guides will then substitute the boat trip(s) for additional activities. There'll be no missing out on wildlife time!
  • Are the midges a problem?
Usually there's a breeze on Mull which helps to negate the annoyance of the midges (they struggle to land on you!). However, on the rare occasion that we have a calm and beautiful day, they can cause issues between the months of May to September. We recommend bringing some 'Smidge' with you. It isn't 100% effective but does the job well.
  • How do I get to Mull?
There are several routes you can take to get here. If driving, there are three ferry routes: 1. Oban - Craignure 2. Lochaline - Fishnish 3. Kilchoan - Tobermory If you're arriving via public transport, there's a direct train to Oban from Glasgow Queen Street. Once in Oban, the train station is right next to the ferry terminal where you can board as a foot passenger. If you're joining us on an Expedition Workshop, we'll pick you up in Craignure (Mull) from the ferry terminal and all your transport will be included in the workshop. If you're booked onto a Short Workshop with us and want to arrive on Mull as a foot passenger, you'll be responsible for all your travel on Mull except the day of your workshop with us.
  • Do we have to provide our own food? What supermarkets and restaurants are there on Mull?
Yes, you’ll be responsible for providing your own breakfast, packed lunches and dinner, but we’ll bring hot drinks and snacks to sustain us on our long days in the field. Please bring reusable bottles for water so we can reduce on the need for plastic. In Oban, there are a number of large supermarkets including Tesco, Lidl, Aldi, and M&S. If bringing your own car, it's worth picking up specialist items there as all the shops on Mull are small, convenience stores. When on Mull, there are shops in Salen, Craignure, Dervaig, and Tobermory that are well stocked. There are lots of restaurants on Mull if you want to treat yourself to meals out -- we can provide recommendations upon booking.
  • How do I pay for my workshop?
Once you've requested to book onto a workshop, we provide you an information pack with more details and a booking form. Payments are made via BACS or Paypal if agreed in advance. All payments are required in GBP (£). If additional charges are incurred as a result of currency exchange, or something else, these must be covered by you in full.
